SSDI – or Social Security Disability Insurance – can be a godsend when one has to live with a disability that wouldn’t him or her to work. However, recent stats indicate that many have found it to be a bitter experience both to apply and to qualify for the benefits.

To begin with, applicants are told that it may take anything up to five months to get a response on the initial application. Even then, more than two-thirds are turned down, and they have to wait another two months before they can request a reconsideration – and that may take up to three more months.

However, there may be a silver lining on the cards. The word is that the Social Security Administration has been making real progress in clearing up the backlog. In any case, it’s still not going to happen overnight, but some established services may be able to intervene and drastically shorten the application and processing time.
