When I was thirteen, I thought 20 was old. When I got there, the world was still wide open, so I figured 40 must be really old. Eventually I turned 40, and the day was still young. But I also looked at some people who had retired, and concluded that was old. Now that I’m close to 76, I see that my spirit is not ‘old’, but my body, which is a machine of Nature, needs help from external sources.

Care homesCare homes. Someone said that was the answer to take care of my emotional, physical and security needs. And finance, location, provision of care and specilities were obviosly other major factors in choosing a carehome. An elaborate search narrowed down to bettercaring.com, a dedicated service offering answers to important questions about care.

To begin with, the site features a database to search all registered UK care homes. The advanced search includes special requirements like period of stay, special needs, location and care needs. Your care options are explained in three categories : care at home, residential care and finance, with each section containing factsheets on care assessments and complaints.

Care at home means you stay in your present home, or moving to a more suitable home, and the facilities include respite care, continence care and buying/renting sheltered or retirement housing or housing with care. You may expect some basic help in your own home, such as meals-on-wheels, or assistance with bathing or shopping. On the other hand, sheltered housing might be more appropriate for you if you like the independence of living in your own self-contained home, which also will have a manager.

Bettercaring.com says residential care is a “positive option for many people.” It discusses whether it’s right for you, and recommends considering staying in your own home is viable. Residential care homes vary from family-style homes to luxury-style homes providing living accommodation, meals, help with personal care such as dressing, supervision of medication, someone on call during any emergency and companionship. Generally, residential care homes provide care during normal short illnesses but they’re not really meant for constant nursing care.

The site offers factsheets on paying for care in England. You will find a number of the agencies listed that provide more detailed information on these topics–including details of finance systems in Scotland and Wales.

While you can look at the available care options to arrive at a decision, the service also offers daily care news and views, and tips on from care experts. Or you can even participate in the community forum that allows you to discuss your own experiences within the care system.
