More than 15 billion batteries are sold every year worldwide, and the number keeps increasing due to higher usage of digital cameras, radios, games, PDAs and other portable electronics. While most alkaline batteries which are discarded after single use, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are rechargeable and environmentally safe.
NiMH batteries batteries are good stewards of the environment because they don’t have any toxic chemicals unlike their counterpart NiCD batteries, which contain the heavy metal Cadmium. Cadmium is highly toxic and considered an environmental pollutant.
NiMH batteries also hold 100% or more charge over similar NiCd batteries due to their higher energy density which makes advantageous for high current drain applications.
They are the most popular rechargeable batteries today since they can be recharged up to 1000 times–which makes them last three times longer than NiCd batteries. Even though NiMH batteries cost a little more than alkaline batteries, they pay themselves off with as few as four recharges.
