Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not just Hollywood stuff anymore. Identity theft is big — and a growing — international business. And the prime target for such thieves is your most essential document — your passport.

Though the electronic world as we know has alleviated the possibilities of exploiting loopholes in the validation of dates and photographs, the risks still remain. The impostors look for people who are most likely to apply for a passport and complete the formalities of applying for a passport assuming such persons’ names and identities.

These illegal activities mainly stem from the fact there’s still a large black market in several countries for fake identities used for fraudulent bank transactions, terrorist activities and avoiding the police network.

If you happen to lose your passport, the first thing to do to would be to inform the authority who issued it. If you’re in a foreign country, you would need to report the loss to your country’s embassy, who might be able to provide you with a temporary passport and spread the word about the loss of your passport among other agencies and authorities.
